Tinubu to launch digital civil registration and vital statistics system

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inaugurated Nigeria’s electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS) at 10:00 a.m., marking a historic joint effort by the National Population Commission (NPC), UNICEF, and Barnksforte Technologies Limited.

The launch introduced the National Geospatial Data Repository and established the National Coordination Committee on CRVS.

This significant milestone emphasizes the government’s commitment to strengthening civil registration, data processing, and access to vital statistics in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16.9.2, focusing on ensuring legal identity for all, including birth registration over the next decade (2023-2030).

Following the African Ministers’ Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics, Nigeria responded by automating the CRVS process, aligning with the United Nations Legal Identity Agenda, exemplified through a comprehensive e-CRVS Operational Readiness Assessment Report developed in collaboration with UNICEF.

The partnership with Barnksforte Technologies Limited signifies a path towards a universal digitalized birth registration system, utilizing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to promote the VITAL REG System, an entirely electronic platform for various civil registrations. This transition from paper-based to digital recording is aligned with global best practices and is poised to revolutionize vital event recording and analysis.

Simultaneously, the inauguration of the CRVS National Coordination Committee establishes a high-level mechanism to ensure the efficient operation of the digital CRVS system, emphasizing legal identity for all and laying a robust foundation for an efficient Civil Registration and Vital Statistics system in Nigeria.
