Atiku Abubakar Concerns Over Supreme Court’s Judgment

Atiku Abubakar Expresses Concern Over Supreme Court’s Presidential Election Judgment

In a World Press Conference held at the PDP Headquarters in Abuja, Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 Election, expressed his concerns regarding the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Presidential Election Petition.

Abubakar highlighted issues of illegality, identity theft, perjury, and electoral irregularities, emphasizing their potential long-term consequences for Nigeria’s democracy and electoral politics.

Abubakar, known for his commitment to democracy and the rule of law, drew parallels to his past struggles against military rule and efforts to uphold constitutional principles. He stressed that the current situation extends beyond his personal interests, focusing on the well-being of Nigeria, its reputation, and the legacy left for future generations.

During the press conference, Abubakar provided evidence of alleged electoral irregularities, including the submission of forged academic certificates by another presidential candidate, Bola A. Tinubu. He expressed concerns about the Supreme Court’s decision and criticized the politicization of the judiciary and the electoral commission.

The former Vice President proposed several constitutional amendments and electoral reforms aimed at ensuring transparency, fairness, and the will of the people in future elections. These proposals included mandatory electronic voting, concluding election litigations before the winner’s inauguration, a runoff system for the presidency, and a single six-year presidential term rotated among the geopolitical zones. Additionally, he called for measures to enhance the transparency and accountability of the electoral and judicial systems.

In closing, Atiku Abubakar emphasized the importance of restoring confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system and the need for transparency in the appointment of judges. He called on the younger generation of Nigerians to lead the efforts to deepen democracy and uphold the rule of law in the country.
