Tinubu approves salary increase for federal institution staff

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given the green light for a significant salary boost for employees in all federal tertiary institutions.

This decision will take effect from the beginning of the new year, January 1, 2023.
The announcement was conveyed through an official memorandum dated September 21, 2023, originating from the office of the Auditor-General. The memo was addressed to Directors of Audit, Heads of Departments, Heads of Units, and the entire staff body.
This salary increment, amounting to 35% for academic staff and 23% for non-academic staff, results from extensive deliberations by the Presidential Committee on Salaries. The committee reached this milestone decision during its 13th meeting, considering the collective bargaining processes across various sectors. Specifically, it recognized the negotiations between the Federal Ministry of Education and Tertiary Institutions-based Unions.
The approved salary increase will apply to the following salary structures:
I. CONPCASS (Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Salary Structure) – Benefitting the academic staff of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.
II. CONTISS II (Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure II) – Non-academic staff of Federal Universities will experience this increment.
III. CONTEDISS (Consolidated Tertiary Education Institutions Salary Structure) – Non-academic staff of Federal Polytechnics and Colleges of Education are also set to benefit.
IV. CONUASS II (Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure II) – Academic staff of Federal Universities will receive this significant boost.
Additionally, the memorandum guarantees that arrears associated with the salary increase will be retroactively paid from the commencement date of January 1, 2023.
This move has been met with enthusiasm and relief by staff members across federal tertiary institutions, marking a significant step towards recognizing their dedication and contribution to the education sector.
