Peter Obi Calls for Ethical Leadership in Nigeria

LP Candidate Emphasizes the Importance of Ethics in Leadership and Addresses University Funding
Nsukka, Nigeria –
Mr. Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, delivered a compelling message on the significance of ethical leadership in Nigeria during a lecture titled “The Ethical Leadership” held in Nsukka on Wednesday.
The lecture, organized by Strategic Contacts, Ethics, and Publications (STRACEP) at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), garnered significant attention.
During his address, Obi emphasized the pivotal role ethics play in shaping a leader’s character and defining their identity.
He urged leaders at all levels in Nigeria to adopt ethical leadership as a means of advancing the nation. Obi lamented the ethical deficits in many leaders, asserting that corruption and unethical behavior persisted because of this deficit.
In addition to his ethical leadership advocacy, the LP Leader expressed concern over the deteriorating state of Nigeria’s universities and called for increased funding to enhance these institutions. He suggested that the substantial funds allocated to the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2023 general elections could be better invested in universities to address infrastructural decay.
Mr. Obi expressed his gratitude to the UNN management for selecting him to deliver the 2023 Ethical Leadership lecture.
UNN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Igwe, echoed Obi’s sentiments on the necessity of ethical leadership in all aspects of society. He emphasized that effective leadership, from the president to local managers and teachers, was vital for the betterment of society.
Dr. Casmir Ani, the Director of STRACEP, reiterated the directorate’s commitment to promoting ethics and adherence to due process in all endeavors. He explained that the choice of awarding ethical leadership recognition to Etiaba, the first female governor, was based on her exemplary performance in governance and ethical leadership.
The event saw the presence of various dignitaries, including Mr. Ifeanyi Ossai, the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, who represented Governor Peter Mbah.
The lecture underscored the critical need for ethical leadership in Nigeria and the importance of investing in the nation’s educational institutions for a brighter future.
