Tinubu Condemns Military Coups at UN General Assembly

Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, addressed the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, urging world leaders to uphold democratic governance as the best safeguard for people’s will and well-being, while condemning military coups.

Tinubu, speaking on behalf of Nigeria and Africa, emphasized the wrongfulness of military coups and any skewed civilian political systems perpetuating injustice. He clarified that the current challenges in parts of Africa demand solutions, not coups.

As Chairman of ECOWAS, Tinubu is actively engaged in negotiations with military leaders in Niger to re-establish democratic governance and address political and economic challenges, including regional instability caused by violent extremists. He extended an open hand to those genuinely supporting this mission.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s alignment with the UN’s principles of peace, security, human rights, and development. He acknowledged Africa’s potential and resources but stressed the need to end poverty, exploitation by stronger nations, and the importance of respecting the will of the people. He envisioned a prosperous, democratic Africa that stands as an equal partner in the global community. Tinubu invited the world to join Africa on this journey, emphasizing that Africa holds the key to the world’s future.

Accompanied by key Nigerian officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Representative to the UN, Tinubu’s address at the UN Assembly underscored Nigeria’s commitment to international cooperation and Africa’s aspirations for a brighter future.
