FCT Minister Reveals Plan to Revolutionize Transport Security

Abuja, Nigeria

In a move towards enhancing transportation’s safety and efficiency, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, through his representative, Mr. Ubokutom Nya, Secretary of the Transport Secretariat, FCTA, has unveiled an innovative plan for digital security integration in transport management.

The was aforementioned at the 2023 Special Marshals Sectoral Workshop.

The initiative has been designed with the goal of ensuring the safety and security of commuters within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while simultaneously optimizing the affordability and effectiveness of transportation services.

A visionary plan is the implementation of a comprehensive digital monitoring system that will encompass the utilization of advanced surveillance cameras to track vehicles ferrying passengers across the FCT.

Under this system, passengers will be required to utilize their mobile phones for scanning in when they embark on their journeys and scan out upon reaching their destinations.

Notably, if a passenger neglects to scan out within the expected timeframe, the digital security system will automatically activate an alarm, facilitating swift action to locate and assist the individual in distress.

Moreover, the FCT administration is actively exploring a myriad of other pioneering innovations aimed at transforming the transportation landscape within the territory.

These innovations include the introduction of modern rail transportation, the expansion of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system, and a comprehensive upgrade of motor parks to meet global standards.

These measures are intended to encourage greater utilization of public transportation and, in turn, alleviate the congestion caused by private vehicles on the city’s roads.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike emphasized the imperative of responsible road usage, underscoring the alarming rate of accidents resulting from non-compliance with traffic regulations. He also expressed his commendation for the establishment of the Special Marshal Division by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), highlighting its role in enhancing road safety across the nation.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, echoed the significance of reviewing road safety management practices and addressing the various factors contributing to road accidents.

He reiterated that road safety is a collective responsibility that involves the active participation of all stakeholders, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative efforts to foster safer and more secure transportation networks in the FCT and beyond.

As the FCT prepares to embark on this transformative journey towards digital transport security, residents and stakeholders alike eagerly await the realization of these innovative measures, which promise to usher in a new era of safety and efficiency in the realm of transportation within the Federal Capital Territory.
