Minister of Labour and Employment Addresses NLC’s Warning Strike Plans Amidst Petrol Subsidy Removal Fallout

In a press conference held at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Bako Lalong, addressed the impending 2-day warning strike announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates.

The strike, scheduled for September 5th and 6th, 2023, comes in response to the removal of petrol subsidy and other government policies.

Minister Lalong expressed sympathy for the challenges faced by Nigerians due to these policy changes.

He emphasized that the government, under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is committed to improving citizens’ livelihoods while acknowledging the temporary hardships these reforms bring.

He highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to cushion the impact of subsidy removal and reduce the cost of energy for transportation. These measures include the distribution of food items, disbursement of funds to states for palliatives, and the promotion of CNG-powered vehicles.

Lalong urged the NLC leadership to suspend the planned strike, emphasizing that the newly-formed cabinet is actively addressing the issues raised.

He reassured Nigerian workers of the government’s commitment to employment generation and addressing immediate challenges.

Regarding specific issues raised by the NLC, the labour Minister promised further measures on subsidy removal, a minimum wage review, and addressing conflicts within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). He also called for a peaceful resolution to disputes with Imo and Abia State Governments.

On the issue of workers’ rights in the Aviation Sector, Minister Lalong stressed the importance of following legal procedures and existing legislations.

He also urged the labour movement to support security agencies in addressing criminal activities like attacks on farmers and advised against industrial action in such cases.

Minister Lalong dismissed concerns about proposed demolitions of illegal structures in the FCT, assuring that actions taken would be within the law and the Abuja Master plan.

The minister reiterated his appeal to the NLC to suspend the warning strike and collaborate on resolving issues for the betterment of all Nigerians.
