Nigeria Mourns Flag Designer

Nigeria Mourns the Passing of Iconic Flag Designer Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi

The visionary mind responsible for the iconic design of Nigeria’s flag, Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, has sadly passed away.

The news of his departure was conveyed by his son, Akinkunmi Akinwumi Samuel, who took to Facebook to express his heartfelt emotions while commemorating the profound legacy his father leaves behind. Samuel penned a poignant tribute, stating, “Life is ephemeral, yet your legacy endures. Rest peacefully, my father, Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi (O.F.R). A titan has left us.”

Pa Akinkunmi’s brilliance shone brilliantly when he conceived the enduring emblem that would come to represent Nigeria. The flag’s verdant green bands stand as a symbol of the nation’s luxuriant forests and abundant natural wealth, while the pristine white band embodies the essence of peace. This visionary design was hoisted on October 1, 1960, ushering in a new era as it replaced the British Union Jack. For his chosen creation, Akinkunmi was rewarded with a sum of 100 pounds.

The sheer dedication and artistic acumen poured into his work resulted in a flag that encapsulated Nigeria’s unity amidst its rich diversity. This masterpiece earned him a humble token of recognition from the government – a 100-pound prize – a mere reflection of the immense value of his contribution.

However, his acknowledgment stretched far beyond this initial remuneration. The esteemed designer was bestowed with the prestigious MON (Member of the Order of the Niger) Award, an honor presented by President Goodluck Jonathan.

This distinguished accolade underscored Pa Akinkunmi’s indelible influence on Nigerian history and culture, cementing his legacy as a true luminary.
