Tragedy Strikes Abuja as Multi-Storey Building Collapses During Heavy Rainfall

 

A devastating incident unfolded on Lagos Street in Garki, Abuja, as a multi-storey building collapsed tragically during a heavy downpour.

The calamity resulted in the loss of two lives, while leaving a number of individuals trapped under the debris. According to witnesses present at the scene, the building encompassed multiple apartments and ground-floor shops.

 

The incident occurred late on Wednesday night, approximately at 11:30 pm, as a torrential rainstorm battered the city. In the midst of the ensuing chaos and desperation, the Federal Emergency Management Authority (FEMA) revealed that 37 individuals were successfully rescued. However, the outcome remained grim as two individuals succumbed to their injuries.

 

Dr. Abbass Idriss, the Director General of FEMA, conveyed, “Out of the 37 individuals rescued, two unfortunate souls lost their lives. At this juncture, the FEMA Search and Rescue team awaits the arrival of excavators to further intensify the search efforts, ensuring no potential survivor remains trapped beneath the rubble of the collapsed structure.”

Responding to the crisis with a united front, a coalition comprised of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Police Command, and the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) joined forces to conduct ongoing and relentless rescue operations.
