ECOWAS STRATEGY FOR NIGER

TINUBU FORMALLY UPDATES SENATE ON ECOWAS’ ACTIONS REGARDING NIGER REPUBLIC CRISIS

President Bola Tinubu has provided the National Assembly with a comprehensive account of ECOWAS’ strategy in response to the recent political turmoil in the Niger Republic.

In an official communication read aloud during a plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu outlined a range of measures being taken by the regional body.

Following the regrettable developments in Niger Republic, which culminated in the ousting of its President, ECOWAS, under my leadership, vehemently denounces the coup and is committed to reinstating the democratically elected government,” stated President Tinubu in the letter.

Among the actions highlighted in the correspondence, Mr. Tinubu informed the Senate of the imposition of sanctions. These measures involve freezing utility services, closing land borders, discontinuing electricity supply, rallying international support, and restricting commercial and special flights to and from Niger Republic.

Furthermore, the letter revealed plans for a blockade of goods in transit, particularly those originating from Lagos and eastern seaports, as well as efforts to raise awareness among both Nigerians and citizens of Niger regarding the significance of these actions through social media channels.

Additionally, there’s a proposed military build-up and personnel deployment to ensure compliance with the demands of the Nigerien military junta, should they persist in their defiance.

The Niger Republic experienced a coup d’état on July 26, 2023, leading to the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and the ascent of General Abdourahamane Tchiani as the head of a new military junta.

During a recent meeting, West African leaders set a one-week deadline for the military junta to relinquish power voluntarily or face potential military intervention.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, however, cautioned against resorting to military force. “As ECOWAS works towards restoring democracy in Niger Republic, it is vital that the regional body refrains from engaging in armed hostilities that could worsen the situation,” urged Mr. Abubakar.
