ECOWAS DELEGATION TO NIGER

PRESIDENT TINUBU DISPATCHES ENVOY TO NIAMEY, URGES ROBUST DIALOGUE TO END IMPASSE

In a decisive move, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, serving as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has dispatched a high-level delegation to Niger Republic, charged with the urgent task of resolving the prevailing political impasse in the nation.

This initiative aligns seamlessly with the resolution arrived at during the extraordinary ECOWAS summit held over the previous weekend in Abuja.

Heading the delegation is former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), a distinguished figure known for his diplomatic acumen. The delegation embarked on its mission to Niamey on Thursday, following a comprehensive briefing by President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) is joined by Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, the revered Sultan of Sokoto, and H.E. Omar Alieu Touray, the esteemed President of the ECOWAS Commission. Their collective expertise and influence underscore the gravity of the mission.

Notably, President Tinubu has also dispatched a parallel delegation, led by Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, to engage in dialogue with the leadership of Libya and Algeria. This approach highlights a multifaceted diplomatic effort to address the complex Niger crisis.

During the briefing, President Tinubu provided clear guidance to both delegations, emphasizing a robust engagement with all stakeholders. The primary objective is to achieve a conclusive and harmonious resolution to the situation in Niger, championing African peace and progress over any external geopolitical influences.

In President Tinubu’s words, “Our commitment is to democracy and regional stability. We are steadfast in our pursuit of these goals.”

Following the briefing, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) spoke optimistically about the delegation’s impending interaction with the leaders of Niger, where they plan to assert the demands of the ECOWAS leadership.

The resolve and optimism displayed by both delegations point towards a promising outlook for the successful completion of their respective missions.
