FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COLLEGES (FGCs) WITNESS 122.2% INCREASE IN SCHOOL FEES

In a recent development, the Federal Government (FG) has announced a significant increase in school fees for Federal Government Colleges, commonly known as Federal Unity Colleges. According to a directive issued by the Office of the Director of Senior Secondary Education Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, reference number ADF/120/DSSE/I, dated 25th May 2023, all principals of Federal Unity Colleges were informed about this fee adjustment.

The approved fees/charges for new students in the 1st Term have been raised from ₦45,000 to ₦100,000, representing a staggering 122.2% increase. This measure, signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, is expected to impact various aspects and activities within the school.
The effects of the fee increment will extend to several areas, including tuition and boarding fees, uniforms, textbooks, deposits, exercise books, prospectus, caution fees, and other related expenses. With this considerable rise in fees, it is anticipated that both students and parents will face financial challenges and adjustments.
The decision to implement this fee increase will undoubtedly raise discussions and debates among various stakeholders, as it directly affects the accessibility and affordability of education in Federal Unity Colleges. While the government may argue that the adjustment is necessary to improve the quality of education and provide better facilities and resources, critics may raise concerns about the potential impact on students from low-income families.
As the academic year progresses, it remains to be seen how students, parents, and educational authorities will respond to this substantial fee hike and what measures will be taken to mitigate its effects on students’ education and overall well-being.
