In response to the Federal Government’s removal of fuel subsidy, Imo State Governor, Hope Odidika Uzodinma, has taken significant steps to alleviate its impact on the people. During a meeting with the state executive council, the governor announced series of measures aimed at cushioning the effects of the subsidy removal on the citizens, especially low-income earners
One of the key measures is the increment in the minimum wage for workers in the state, which has been raised to N40,000. Governor Uzodinma expressed his concerns for the suffering of the people, particularly those with lower incomes, stating, “I have watched with keen interest how our people have been faring since the removal of the subsidy on fuel was announced. I can tell you that I am deeply worried by my observations. It is clear to me that our people are suffering, particularly the low-income earners. I feel the pains, and this is why I have come up with some initiatives to cushion the effect.”
Additionally, the governor announced an immediate salary and wage review for state workers, with a discretionary and consequential adjustment of other salary levels. This measure is expected to further alleviate financial burdens for workers.
To provide better transportation options for workers, the government will expand the existing free transportation service by adding ten new buses to the fleet. This expansion will ensure comprehensive coverage of the state capital’s routes, making the service easily accessible to every worker.
To address the issue of rising food prices, the Imo State Marketing and Commodity Board (ISMCB) will be established. The board’s objective is to ensure that food items are sold at affordable prices. Furthermore, low-cost markets will be set up in all 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
In an effort to support farmers and enhance agricultural productivity, the government will provide a N5 billion soft loan to assist farmers in their endeavors.
The education sector will also receive attention, with the establishment of a scholarship education board to support students whose parents cannot afford to send them to school. This initiative aims to enable brilliant students from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue higher education opportunities.
In a move to ease the tax burden on low-income earners, the governor hinted at exempting individuals earning below N100,000 annually from state taxes, helping to alleviate financial pressures for those struggling with their finances.
Through these comprehensive initiatives, the Imo State government is determined to mitigate the adverse effects of the fuel subsidy removal and alleviate the suffering of its people, providing much-needed relief and support during this challenging time.
