Federal Government Announces Holiday Travel Discounts

President Bola Tinubu has greenlit a substantial holiday gift for Nigerians, approving a 50% discount on inter-state road travels and a full 100% waiver on train trips for citizens commuting to spend Christmas with their families.

The announcement was made by Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals, during a press briefing at the State House on Wednesday. Alake revealed that the discount would be effective from December 21 to January 4, 2024.

In addressing the economic challenges faced by the nation, Alake conveyed President Tinubu’s commitment to alleviating the financial strain on citizens during the festive season. He stated, “President Tinubu wants Nigerians to be able to travel within Nigeria to wherever they want to go to meet their loved ones without the extra burden of paying exorbitantly for inter-state public transportation.”

Starting from the following day, a special discounted holiday fare for road transport and zero-fare for rail services will be implemented across Nigeria. Alake clarified, “Nigerians willing to travel can board public transport via luxury buses at a 50% discount of the current cost, and all our train services on the routes the trains currently serve at zero cost to and fro on their travels this holiday season.”

To facilitate this initiative, the federal government, through the Ministry of Transportation, will collaborate with transporters, road transport unions, and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).

In an additional statement, Alake emphasized President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring a safe holiday period, directing security agencies to collaborate in safeguarding the nation. “The federal government under the leadership of President Tinubu is working very hard to make sure Nigerians have a memorable and happy holiday season,” he affirmed.

While extending holiday wishes to all Nigerians, Alake urged citizens to be law-abiding, security-conscious, and compassionate towards one another. He concluded, “While we celebrate and enjoy all the social activities that come with the season, let us also remember to celebrate in moderation.”
