Ex- CBN Governor Emefiele Remanded in Kuje over alledge N1.6b Fraud 

Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, has directed the immediate remand of the ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Emefiele faces a six-count charge brought forth by the Nigerian government, alleging a procurement fraud of N1.6 billion.

Originally facing 20 counts for N6.5 billion, the charges against Emefiele have been reduced to six, amounting to N1.6 billion. The former CBN governor, pleading not guilty, appeared in court for the proceedings a bail application.

The charges revolve around allegations that Emefiele, during his tenure, unlawfully acquired 43 vehicles between 2018 and 2020, totaling N1.2 billion. The amended charge sheet specifies instances where he is accused of awarding contracts for vehicles worth millions to a company connected to a Central Bank staff member.

The trial judge, Justice Hamza Muazu, scheduled the case for further proceedings, with a ruling on Emefiele’s bail application set for November 22 and the trial commencement on November 28.

In the interim, Emefiele has been ordered to be held in the Kuje Correctional Centre.
