IGP ensures election security measures in Imo, Kogi and Bayelsa

IGP Egbetokun Enforces Vehicle and Waterway Restrictions for Off-Season Governorship Elections

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has implemented strict measures in preparation for off-season governorship elections in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa states.

As of Tuesday, the IGP announced a comprehensive ban on vehicular movement within these three states to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Furthermore, the restrictions extend to the waterways of these regions, with canoes, ships, boats, and other vessels being prohibited from operation starting this Friday.

These decisions have been enacted in line with efforts to guarantee a fair, free, and credible election in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa. IGP Egbetokun also imposed limitations on state-owned security agencies, preventing them from conducting operations during the election exercise.

During a press briefing at the Force Headquarters, it was revealed that the police have deployed both marine and gunboats to these riverine states to enhance security measures. These measures come ahead of the off-cycle election scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2023.

Force spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, speaking on behalf of the police chief, disclosed that the three states have been reinforced with various security equipment, including helicopters for aerial patrol.

The upcoming off-season governorship elections in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa have gained significant attention due to the stringent security measures in place to maintain law and order.
