Governor Dikko Advocates for Citizens’ Access to Firearms for Self-Defense Amid Insecurity Crisis
The Governor of Katsina State, Umaru Dikko Radda, has urged the Federal Government to permit Nigerian citizens to purchase and possess firearms, including AK-47 rifles and RPGs, to protect themselves in the face of escalating insecurity challenges.
Governor Radda made this daring call during a recent media chat in the nation’s capital, Abuja. He emphasized the necessity for civilians to have access to these weapons as a means of self-defense, drawing attention to the fact that criminals, such as bandits, were readily acquiring these arms from illicit sources.
“If a bandit can go to the market and buy an AK-47, RPG, and all of those weapons, what about the people that want to protect themselves? They, too, should be equally allowed to do so,” the governor stated.
He argued that while criminals were illegally holding these firearms, responsible citizens should be permitted to acquire them legally, thus enabling them to confront the security challenges that have plagued the country.
Governor Radda’s proposition included the contentious stance of refusing negotiations with bandits. However, he mentioned that if the bandits voluntarily choose to surrender their arms and engage in dialogue, there could be an opportunity for their reintegration into society.
In response to the governor’s statement, an anonymous security expert voiced support for the idea of granting citizens access to firearms, emphasizing the potential benefits of such a move. The expert contended that when people are allowed to own firearms, they gained the ability to safeguard themselves and their families, reducing their vulnerability to intimidation from criminals.
