New Lead Pastor Jimmy Odukoya Addresses Controversy Surrounding His Appearance with Scriptural Explanation
In a recent interview with BBC News Pidgin, Jimmy Odukoya, the newly appointed lead pastor of the Fountain of Life Church, responded to the mixed reactions that arose on social media regarding his distinctive appearance, including his dreadlocks and beard.
Odukoya asserted that his unconventional appearance is firmly grounded in scripture.
The announcement of Odukoya’s leadership role triggered a flurry of discussions online, with some questioning whether his appearance aligns with traditional expectations for a pastor. In response to these concerns, Odukoya stated, “God has called me into this new season of my life. This new position is a big responsibility. All of my focus is here (on the church). As for my dreads, most people don’t know I can back up everything I do with scripture.”
He went on to cite biblical references that he believes support his appearance choices. Odukoya mentioned the example of Samson, who was instructed not to cut his hair in the Bible, suggesting that long hair is not inherently negative. Additionally, he pointed to the account of Jesus’ torture, where it is described that hair was pulled from His face, implying that facial hair is not contrary to scripture.
Odukoya emphasized that personal opinions should not be equated with defining something as sinful, and he encouraged people not to judge him based on their personal beliefs.
Moreover, Odukoya clarified his history within the church, stating, “I was ordained as a minister in 2009 and became a pastor in the church in 2012. I was the lead pastor of the youth church until 2020 or 2021.”
Despite the controversy surrounding his appearance and leadership, Odukoya expressed resilience, citing the personal challenges he has faced in life. He noted that he has endured the loss of several close family members, including his father and mother, which has fortified his resolve. Odukoya described his late father as a strong and vibrant individual.
