Governor Zulum Unveils 70 Buses for Metro Transport and Civil Servants, Inaugurates New Facilities at Terminus

In a bid to address the challenges arising from the recent removal of fuel subsidy, Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, took a significant step by introducing a fleet of 70 buses for metro transport and civil servants’ commuting needs.

This initiative is poised to alleviate the transportation burdens faced by government employees and the general public.

The grand unveiling ceremony took place at the Borno Express terminus located along the Kano-Maiduguri road. The newly acquired fleet comprises standard-sized buses as well as larger vehicles designed to accommodate a substantial number of passengers.

These buses have been equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning facilities and comfortable seating arrangements to ensure a pleasant commuting experience for all.

Governor Zulum, addressing the crowd, underscored the importance of this intervention, stating that it is the second phase of measures taken to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidy removal. Of the 70 buses, 30 are exclusively dedicated to transporting civil servants to and from their workplaces during the peak hours of 7:00 am to 9:00 am for morning pickups and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm for evening returns, from Mondays to Fridays.

The governor urged swift action, demanding that the buses commence operations the following morning without fail. He emphasized that the aim is to provide an essential social service and not to generate revenue from this initiative.

Governor Zulum also lauded the management of Borno Express for their efforts in transforming the Maiduguri terminus and improving the welfare of both current and retired staff. He commended the General Manager for ensuring timely payment of staff entitlements, describing it as a praiseworthy commitment.

In addition to the bus fleet inauguration, Governor Zulum further showcased his commitment to enhancing transportation and accommodation facilities in the region. He unveiled a series of newly constructed structures and remodeled buildings at the terminus. These structures are intended to provide accommodation for travelers and support the operations of various businesses, including restaurants and offices.

During the tour of the newly constructed facilities, General Manager Mohammed Grema highlighted that all the construction projects were funded internally, generated from the revenue of the Borno Express company.

This demonstrates a commendable commitment to the development of vital infrastructure within the state.
