Financial Intermediaries Announces Two-Day Service Withdrawal

NLC Responds to Government Meddling in Union Affairs

In response to recent government interference in union activities, the National Union of Banks, Insurance, & Financial Institutions Employees, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has announced a two-day nationwide withdrawal of services scheduled for September 5th and 6th, 2023.
This decision comes on the heels of a communique issued after the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on August 31st, 2023. The NEC, representing various labor affiliates, directed its members to participate in the protest action to draw attention to the challenging economic conditions faced by Nigerian workers.
The NLC’s move is a clear message to the government, expressing their discontent with what they perceive as unwarranted interference in union affairs, rather than addressing the pressing economic issues faced by the workforce.
In a statement issued by Mohanned L. Sheikh, the General Secretary of the National Union of Banks, Insurance, & Financial Institutions Employees, the directive calls for full compliance from all affiliated organizations. All members are urged to abstain from their regular duties during the specified two days.
The NLC emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity among workers during this period, with the hope that the government will take notice of their concerns and engage in meaningful dialogue to address the economic challenges faced by the labor force.
This decision marks a significant development in the ongoing dialogue between labour unions and the government regarding workers’ rights and economic conditions in Nigeria. The NLC expects the government to take their concerns seriously and seek a resolution to the issues at hand.
The Nigeria Labour Congress anticipates that the nationwide service withdrawal will have a substantial impact, sending a strong message to the government and garnering support from workers across various sectors.
