UPDATE PREPAID METERS BY NOVEMBER 2024- NERC.

NERC Urges Nigerians to Update Prepaid Meters Ahead of November 2024 Deadline

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has called upon users of prepaid meters to carry out an update before November of the coming year.

This announcement was made through NERC’s official X handle (formerly known as Twitter)

The commission has warned that after November 2024, prepaid meter users might encounter difficulties while attempting to recharge their meters if the mandatory update is not completed within the specified timeframe.

Emphasizing that this update will be conducted free of charge, NERC has recommended that users reach out to their respective electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to obtain more comprehensive information regarding the update process.

Furthermore, the electricity regulatory agency has assured users that the update procedure will not impact the existing units stored in the meters.

“If you are a prepaid meter user, the time may be ripe for an update. By November 2024, your meter’s recharge function could be impaired. However, fear not, as the update procedure is both simple and cost-free.

DisCos are set to provide 2 Key Change Tokens (KCTs) without charge, and these tokens will facilitate the update process for your meter,” the statement affirms.

“The update process will have no bearing on the units currently residing in your meter, and it will not cause your meter to operate at an accelerated pace. Feel free to get in touch with your DisCo for additional details.”

Conlog, a notable authority in the field, has outlined the technical solution as resetting each meter to align with a new base date. This will be achieved by inputting two specialized tokens before the impending deadline of November 24, 2024.
