Medical Consultants Threaten Strike Over Government’s Failure to Meet Demands
The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government, giving them 21 days to address their demands.
The association’s key concern is the review and implementation of the revised Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), an agreement made with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
In a formal statement, the MDCAN expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s approach, highlighting that the current circular only covers a percentage increase in basic salary. However, it fails to apply to both basic salary and allowances, excluding hazard allowance. This omission has left clinical lecturers, referred to as honorary consultants, without the benefits of the revision.
The MDCAN also emphasized the need for any salary increment to account for fuel subsidy removal and high inflation. Victor Makanjuola, President of MDCAN, urged the resolution of issues with the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) to ensure the effective functioning of government hospitals.
The association’s demands include a correction to the implementation date, comprehensive review regarding economic impacts, and universal applicability of CONMESS to all medical and dental doctors. The MDCAN’s ultimatum expires in 21 days, and its outcome will significantly impact the nation’s healthcare sector and the well-being of the people
