Tribunal Judge Rejects Bribe, Issues Stern Warning to Deter Future Attempts

In a striking display of integrity, Justice Flora Azinge, the chairman of the Kano State National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, has rejected a brazen attempt by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to influence her decision through bribery.
The incident occurred within the hallowed halls of the tribunal on Tuesday morning.
Addressing the court in a tone that resonated with a mix of indignation and determination, Justice Azinge decried the alarming prevalence of unethical practices among senior legal professionals. She did not divulge the identity of the senior lawyer involved, but noted that the individual had a case pending before her tribunal.
With visible resolve, Justice Azinge stated, “A Senior Advocate of Nigeria who has a pending case before me is attempting to bribe me. Money has been flowing into this tribunal since yesterday. Whoever dares to accept money on my behalf will incur the wrath of God upon themselves and their progeny up to the fourth generation.”
Justice Azinge’s passionate words also addressed the wider issue of judges being unjustly accused and defamed in public spaces. She countered the narrative perpetuated by some elements in the media who portray the judiciary as corrupt, emphasizing her commitment to upholding the principles of fairness and justice.
“Every day, they hurl insults at us, accusing us of corruption through various media outlets. Let me reiterate that no one should ever approach me with money again. I am satisfied with the blessings God has bestowed upon me, and I have a shelter over my head,” the judge firmly asserted.
Justice Azinge’s uncompromising stance sends a resounding message to those attempting to undermine the sanctity of the legal system.
Her dedication to justice and her resolve to maintain her integrity serve as a beacon of hope for the judiciary’s integrity in the face of challenges.
