In a bid to ease the financial strain on residents caused by the withdrawal of fuel subsidy, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has taken a decisive step towards providing much-needed relief.

On Wednesday, Zulum spearheaded the distribution of essential supplies and food items to 2,000 households residing in the Feezan ward of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC).

The distribution event unfolded within the premises of the Mohammed Goni College of Legal and Islamic Studies. This move is part of Governor Zulum’s ongoing initiative to mitigate the escalating financial difficulties resulting from the recent cessation of fuel subsidies by the Federal Government.

Heralding the initiative, Zulum commenced the distribution of palliatives in July, focusing on assisting a staggering number of 300,000 households, with an average of six individuals per household, effectively aiming to reach a staggering 1.8 million people in dire need of assistance.

Under the compassionate program, each eligible resident within the Feezan ward was presented with a palliative voucher. These vouchers entitled beneficiaries to procure essential food items, offering respite from the mounting costs of everyday commodities, which have seen a steady increase.

During the recent distribution operation in Feezan, a total of 2,000 households were beneficiaries of the relief effort. This group was comprised of 1,000 male-headed households and an equivalent number of female-headed households. In a gesture of tangible support, each of these households received a bag of rice and a bag of beans.

To underscore the principles of transparency and accountability, the Borno State Government actively involved civil society in the pivotal palliative distribution committee. By doing so, the state government aimed to ensure a fair selection process that ultimately reached the households most deserving of the relief.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Zulum at the distribution event, Sugun Mai Mele, the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirates Affairs, emphasized that the effort was far-reaching. He announced that a total of 15 wards within the Maiduguri Metropolis would benefit from the relief initiative. Each of these wards would receive a generous allocation of 2,000 bags of rice and an equivalent number of bags of beans.

As Governor Zulum’s commitment to alleviating the hardship caused by the discontinuation of fuel subsidies remains steadfast, the palpable impact of these relief efforts is likely to resonate positively within Borno State. The distribution of palliatives offers a beacon of hope to countless households, reiterating the government’s unwavering dedication to supporting its citizens during times of economic strain.
