UNION LEADERS COMMEND NIGERIANS FOR RESILIENCE

NLC Commends Nigerians for Successful Protest Against Fuel Price Hike

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has  extends its heartfelt appreciation Nigerians for their unwavering solidarity during the nationwide protest against recent fuel price increase on August 2nd.

In collaboration with the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the protest strongly voiced opposition to what was perceived as policies harmful to the poor and the people.

Despite government pressures, the masses across the nation united, displaying resilience and determination.

The NLC declared the protest a “resounding success” and a clear message to the government about public dissatisfaction with the fuel price hike.

Resilient Voices: The streets of Nigeria echoed with the unified voices of its citizens, who turned out in impressive numbers, undeterred by attempts to discourage their participation. The NLC applauds this unwavering dedication of the people to reclaim their rights. This unity reaffirmed that the true strength of the nation lies in its people, who emphatically demand positive and lasting changes.

Government’s Response: The impact of the protest reverberated even within the highest echelons of power. Acknowledging the compelling message from the public, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu requested a closed-door meeting with NLC and TUC leadership. This engagement produced significant outcomes:

Restructured Engagement Approach: The government committed to restructuring its engagement framework with labour leaders. Future major economic decisions will involve consultations with labour representatives, ensuring a broader perspective and informed choices.

Refinery Production Assurance: A notable achievement emerged as President Tinubu pledged to initiate production at the Portharcourt Refinery by December this year. This pivotal step enhances Nigeria’s self-reliance and contributes to its economic progress.

Salary Increase: Recognizing the importance of fair compensation, the government promised swift agreement on wage adjustments for Nigerian workers, addressing a long-standing demand.

Eco-Friendly Transition: Demonstrating forward-looking policy, the government vowed to unveil a viable roadmap for the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) alternative in the coming week. This move signifies a proactive stride toward sustainable energy sources, reducing the nation’s dependence on imported fuel.

A Renewed Era of Dialogue: Encouraged by these commitments and the President’s dedication to positive change, the NLC and TUC have embraced a revitalized approach to dialogue. In a display of solidarity, Nigerian workers from various sectors, including Airports, Seaports, Hospitals, and Schools, will gather nationwide during contempt proceedings.

Empowered by the President’s resolve, the labour unions have chosen to re-engage in a fresh and dynamic dialogue for full implementation.

In a joint statement signed by the union, Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of NLC, and his counterpart Comrade Festus Osifo, President of TUC expresses deep gratitude to the steadfast citizens of Nigeria for their resolute support. This collective spirit magnifies their influence, propelling tangible change. As both the government and citizens collaborate to shape a brighter future, the NLC remains steadfast in its mission to protect the rights, well-being, and aspirations of all Nigerians

As Nigeria embarks on a new chapter guided by unity and determination, the shared journey toward progress and prosperity continues to unfold.
